Brass bands, trombones and Oompa Loompas

Mary Saddleworth Whit March HABC Quality Assurance Auditor Mary Golder recently took part in a marching band event for a breast cancer charity, and found herself on the front page of the local newspaper with an Oompa Loompa!

Mary was playing trombone with Boobs and Brass , which raises money for breast cancer, as part of the traditional Whit Friday Marches in Saddleworth Moor which have taken place every June since at least the 1880s.

Mary said, ‘Boobs and Brass are an all-female charity brass band raises money for breast cancer, and from playing at the Whit Friday Marches in Saddleworth and collecting in the nearby villages we raised over £1500 for charity, which is fantastic.

Our percussion section dressed up for the occasion, and as we played the theme from Willy Wonka – and our bass drummer was dressed up as him – we of course had to have an Oompa Loompa!
Unfortunately this will be the last time I march, as I have arthritis in my spine and couldn’t walk after I had done this. Unless of course I work out how to play trombone and steer a mobility scooter at the same time’.

Earlier in the year, Mary played with opera singer Lesley Garrett and the Dore Male Voice Choir at Sheffield City Hall.

Mary’s next outing is in Brighouse, Calderdale, on 28 June 2014. To donate to Boobs and Brass, go to http://www.boobsandbrass.com /.

Claire’s Race for Life challenge

The last few years have seen Race for Life become one the most popular – and best known –charity events in the UK.

Held over a 5 km course, the race gives women the opportunity to raise money for cancer research whilst recognising the struggle of those who have battled the disease.

This year, Claire James, HABC Corporate Account Manager – and self-confessed ‘non-runner’ – undertook the challenge with her mum, Roz Vout.

We asked Claire to tell us more about how the race – held at Clumber Park , Bassetlaw, on 21 June 2014 – went.

Claire and her mum Roz ‘Having never taken part in Race for Life I had no idea of what to expect. We trained one to two times weekly from late February, before which I had previously been known to state that “You wouldn’t catch me running – not even for a bus if I was running late’. Prior to the race I had not managed to run continuously for more than 3 km, so to do 5 km all at once was going to be a challenge.

The day itself was incredible, with a great atmosphere and lots of pre-race motivation from Hallam FM . Some of the stories told by brave cancer sufferers, and those who had been affected either directly or through friends and family diagnosed with cancer, were incredibly touching, and a minute’s silence to remember those who had lost their battle really brought it home.

Race for Life sticker The race began shortly after 2.30pm, with mum and I at the front of the ‘joggers’ section. The first 2k was extremely tough due to it being mostly uphill and on rough tarmac in bright, warm sunshine. At 2.5k, the group had dispersed slightly and we veered off onto a track through beautiful woodland.

In a more peaceful environment the running became manageable, the shade of the trees keeping us cool, and we cheered each other on with the odd (though breathless!) motivational statement. At 3.5k, we could hear the music over the PA system and we guessed that we were not far from the finish line. Before long we were back on the tarmac, passing the long stream of ‘walkers’ who had just set off and receiving encouraging words from the roadside marshals.

Claire, mum Roz and Charlie the dog The noise of the crowd became louder as we neared the final bend in the road, uphill towards the finish line. My stepfather, Tony, who is an avid triathlete, stood in a layby with Charlie the dog – springing up as he recognised us – and we heard him shout “Final 300 metres!”

To mum and I, this could have been 300 miles, but we pushed on to be greeted by hundreds of well-wishers along the approach to the finish line, clapping and offering words of support to keep us going. A huge, proud and emotional lump threatened to rise in my throat, but I mustered two ‘thumbs-up’ as we approached the finish line as the clock ticked towards the 30 minute mark. Mum clasped my hand as we made one final push to get across the line.

Our final time…30 minutes and four seconds! And I’d completed 5k in one go, which was for me an incredible personal achievement! Race for life vest

We were rewarded with medals, cold bottled water and a chocolate chip brioche, which we consumed in the shade of a tree – followed by a toilet stop! – and delicious ice cream on the walk back to the car. We felt incredibly proud, not only to be part of this event and cause, but to be alive and well enough to compete. We all take so much for granted, but cancer can strike at any time and nobody is immune to it.

So far I have raised £80 from colleagues at work (more donations are welcome!). We have also a shared JustGiving account with additional contributions from friends and family members.’

Three Peaks Challenge with RedCat Partnership

We know that many of our clients like to do their bit for good causes.  This May, Richard Mills of the RedCat Partnership Ltd Health and Safety Consultants , took on the Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for Break – a charity that aims to change the lives of disadvantaged young people across East Anglia.

We asked Richard to explain in his own words how the Challenge went.

Richard on Ben Nevis

Richard Mills on Ben Nevis

‘A casual conversation with a client, Ben Burt from Open Youth Trust , included the phrase “We need a challenge this year.  What shall we do?”  Whilst Ben was holidaying in Australia, I signed us up for the Three Peaks Challenge!  This involves climbing the three highest peaks in Britain ( Ben Nevis , Scafell Pike and Snowdon ) in a set time, usually 24 hours, including driving.  Well, our local charity, Break, were organising this with minibuses, accommodation and leaders, and a varied group of about 25 participants was soon brought together for the Challenge.  Many of us were novices, so 24 hours was going to be hard core.  We settled on 36 hours, which was still a stretch.

Peak of Ben Nevis

Team Roo on the summit of Ben Nevis

So, cut straight to much purchasing of gear and training.  Norfolk is flat so we improvised with whatever hills we could find.  Nervous anticipation grew as our mid-May expedition grew near.  Fort William is a long way by minibus.  At Ben Nevis, my group, ‘Team Roo’ – named after our inflatable mascot – as the fittest and most experienced team, set off last at 11 am.

Glorious sun at the bottom, snow, ice and freezing cloud at the top, so straight back down again.  Hmmm, left knee starting to complain.

Team Roo on Scafell

Team Roo on the summit of Scafell Pike – very early in the morning!

Off to Cumbria, arriving at Scafell at 01.00 am.  Still clear evening, full moon. Perfect.  Climbing in the dark was an absolute blast, reaching the peak at 04.30 am for dawn.  Starting the descent, knee now quite painful.  Painkillers needed.  Then more.  Oh no!  Medic suggested some prescription painkillers as I’m now holding the group up.  Made it to the bottom, straight on the bus for Snowdon.

Ben Burt on Snowdon

Ben Burt enjoys the scenery on top of Snowdon

Alas the defective knee plus a couple of vomiting bouts on the bus (painkiller reaction) meant my expedition was over.  Ben and Team Roo succeeded to climb Snowdon under a cloudless sky.  We raised over £20,000 between us for Break.  Well, 48-year-old knees have a few miles on them I guess.

We’re all off to the Yorkshire Three Peaks in September to abuse our knees some more.’
