First Aid Qualification Update – Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Training

In June, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) announced the requirement for all workplace first-aiders to be trained in the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) from 31 December 2016. This is as a result of a change to the guidelines of the Resuscitation Council UK , which now state that when managing a casualty in need of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), a first-aider must request an AED .

To accommodate these changes and cover the use of an AED, Highfield will be amending the qualification specification and practical assessment pack for the following qualifications:

Centres running courses from 31 December 2016 will be required to assess learners in the use of an AED. However, this will be optional prior to this date.

We anticipate that the subject of using an AED will be covered in the CPR section of each qualification. Learners should be assessed on their ability to demonstrate the following skills:

  • place AED pads correctly
  • follow AED instructions

Additionally, please note, the following requirements must be met when delivering training on the use of an AED:

  • centres must have 1 training AED available for every 4 learners on a course. This does allow for adjustment to lesson plans so long as the ratio of 1:4 is maintained and centres ensure learners are not disadvantaged.
  • centres running first-aid courses must ensure their tutors and assessors are sufficiently knowledgeable and competent in the use of an AED

We shall keep you updated with any further updates we receive regarding these qualifications. In the meantime, if you require any further information, please contact your account manager.

CIEH – voluntary surrender of recognition

chef-cutting-tuna-fish-by-phanlop88 As many of you will be aware, the CIEH has announced it intends to surrender its status as a regulated awarding organisation and is withdrawing its regulated and non-regulated qualification provision. We recognise this is a deeply worrying time for existing CIEH centres, many of whom will have already allocated budgets and purchased resources for programmes of learning and assessment.

Highfield has been operating in the compliance market for over 30 years and has been one of the UK’s leading providers of food safety, health and safety, first aid and numerous other vocationally related qualifications since our awarding arm was established. Highfield is passionate about supporting businesses and continuously raising standards, and currently provides qualifications and learning resources to over 2 million learners per year. Our Chairman Richard actually developed most of the original CIEH food safety courses and is recognised as being one of the world’s leading industry experts.

Highfield is already providing assistance to numerous organisations affected by the announcement and will be offering free registration (usually £400) to all UK-based CIEH centres until 31 December 2016. We will ensure that, given the opportunity to work with you, the transition over to Highfield will be seamless. Also you will have the added benefit that Highfield offers all of the main qualifications (and many more) that were offered by the CIEH. This means you will only need to register with one awarding organisation if you offer a full suite of food safety, HACCP or health and safety qualifications. Our range of compliance qualifications can be viewed here .

Highfield has a very experienced team who can help at any time with any questions you have, however, we also offer a free-to-subscribe food safety LinkedIn group, which has around 1,000 members. If you would like to discuss food safety-related issues with fellow trainers, you may wish to consider joining this group. You can join here .

As the UK’s leading provider of compliance qualifications, we are proud to work with a wide range of small and large training providers, colleges, local authorities and corporate clients. Our brand is well known and respected throughout the UK and internationally.

First ever Asian Apprenticeship Awards launched

asian-apprenticeship-awards Asian apprentices from all over the country will get the chance to have their achievements recognised with the launch of the first ever Asian Apprenticeship Awards .

Taking place at the Holiday Inn Hotel, Birmingham on 10 November 2016, the event is the first of its kind to highlight the work of Asian apprentices and employers, and aims to address the under-representation of Asian trainees and businesses in the learning sector.

Figures from the Skills Funding Agency show that just 4.1 percent of apprentices are from the Asian community, although the government has announced plans to increase that to 20 percent by 2020 as part of ambitious plans to create 3 million new apprenticeships by the end of the decade.

Over 500 guest are expected at the awards – which are being supported by some of the key figures in the learning sector such as the AELP and WorldSkills UK – with 22 different category prizes up for grabs for apprentices and employers alike.

Safaraz Ali, one of the event organisers, said, ‘Traditionally, Asians going into further education take an academic route through colleges and universities. As a result, people are missing a great opportunity. However, we want to celebrate the very best of young Asian apprentices and those that employ them’.
