New Highfield-kits available for apprenticeships and work-based learning

Highfield Kit banner Highfield has launched a new and updated range of user-friendly Highfield-kits to better meet the needs of learners and educators, and reflect industry changes

The four kits cover all aspects of the learning programmes offered by Highfield, and are available as physical hardcopies in a folder or as fillable PDF ‘E-kits’, where exercises can be completed and saved digitally, then uploaded and mapped via your e-portfolio provider or online tracking server.

We also offer the opportunity to create bespoke kits with your own branding.

The four different types of kit are:

Apprenti-kits
Our Apprenti-kits support learners as they progress through their apprenticeship frameworks, and provide information and assessments, allowing learners to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding.  They specifically support the knowledge-based qualifications of apprenticeship frameworks, with tasks included to suit different learners’ needs and styles.    Each Apprenti-kit includes a welcome booklet, textbooks and workbooks, while the Essentials of Employment Handbook can be added for an additional £3.50.

Employability-kits
Employability-kits enhance the learning experience of those taking a pre-employment qualification prior to starting a career.  Centres can choose from a wide selection of units to create their own bespoke Employability-kits at Level 1 or Level 2, with a textbook and workbook included for each unit.

Trainee-kits
Our Trainee-kits have been designed to inspire, motivate and engage learners taking a traineeship, and cover a multitude of subjects including business and administration, customer service, retail, warehousing and health and social care. Each Trainee-kit includes a welcome booklet, a work preparation section, textbooks and workbooks. You can build your own kits suited to your programme with many units being available to choose from.

Knowledge-kits
Knowledge-kits cover standalone qualifications in subject areas including business and administration, customer service, team leading and warehousing and storage, and include a textbook and workbook for each mandatory unit of the qualification.

If you would like to purchase any of our kits, sign into the members’ area and add them to your learner registration purchases. Alternatively, click here

UK at risk of another ‘horsegate’ scandal warns top expert

The UK is at risk of another ‘horsegate’ scandal similar to the one in 2013 which may have been responsible for up to 50,000 horses disappearing from across Europe, according to the country’s top food fraud expert.

Professor Chris Elliott Professor Chris Elliott, who was appointed by the government to investigate the horsemeat scandal and food fraud in the UK, warned that unless the issue was taken seriously by authorities and the police, it was likely to happen again.

Speaking at a conference looking into food fraud this September, the professor said that:

  • Food fraud is an organised and global criminal enterprise involving gangs such as the Mafia and the Central American drug cartels
  • Up to 50,000 horses ‘disappeared’ from Europe during the financial meltdown which started around 2008.  People could no longer afford to keep them – and it’s probable a lot of these horses ended up in our food supply system
  • The 2013 horsegate scandal was a close call as there was little direct threat to public health, but next time we may not be so lucky

The professor, who is Director of the Institute for Global Food Security at Queen’s University Belfast , issued the warning at the Fighting Food Fraud conference in Doncaster on 17 September 2015, hosted by Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance (‘HABC’) , one of the UK’s leading exam boards.

Professor Elliott said, ‘2013 was a wake-up call for the UK.  While there was no direct evidence of a threat to public health, there have been food fraud scandals in other countries that have affected thousands – and in some cases hundreds of thousands – of people.   In China in 2008, over 300,000 infants were made ill by adulterated milk, with six sadly dying.  With organised gangs becoming attracted in to food fraud, we must act now to prevent public health threats. The idea that 50,000 horses could just disappear may seem incredible to some, but the scale at which some of these gangs can operate is huge.  Wherever there is money to be made – and the sums involved in food fraud are in the billions – criminals will find a way’.

He added, ‘The establishment of the National Food Crime Unit by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) is a good first step and having spoken to its head, Andy Morling, I am hopeful that we can begin to tackle the issue and better protect the public.  The only way we can succeed is for everyone, from farmers and producers to retailers and the authorities, to work together to improve the tracking and auditing of our food supply chain’.

Welcome to Highfield Central – our new online management system

Highfield is bringing its online Course Management System and Learner Management System together into one brand new digital resource – Highfield Central.

The new system will help Highfield Centres to manage both course-based and assessor-based qualifications, request exam papers, place orders, purchase registrations and register learners from one easy-to-use central location.

As part of the change, all qualifications will now sit in just one place, helping Centres and administrators manage the process better, while associated products and learner resources will be available to order from the same location.  Centres will also be able to see how many registrations they have purchased or banked, allowing a stock check and improved transparency of purchases for their own records.

The majority of qualifications will be moved over to Highfield Central by 15 October 2015, the exceptions being security (licence-linked), endorsed, international and pool lifeguarding qualifications, which will move later in the year.

If you’ve already posted courses starting after 15 October on the Course Management System that need to be moved to Highfield Central, our IT team will transfer these for you and provide you with new course ID numbers.

A guidance document for those offering course-based qualifications has already been published, with further guidance and instructions due to be posted shortly.  In the meantime, if you have any questions, your account manager will be on hand to help you.
